The Unforgivable Sin – What Is It?
What is the unforgivable sin? Many are afraid they have committed it. Here is what Jesus actually said – and the good news of freedom it leads to.
(Acts 17:11: Please learn to do your own Bible studies like this one – here.)
Why So Many Fear the Unforgivable Sin
Many struggle with this question and feel afraid of having committed it due to the condemnation and accusations of demons speaking inside or from outside them – and due to wrong teaching, and due to the battles with their own sin and due to a faulty understanding of “righteousness by faith” (please read my teaching about that here).
This teaching will clarify the issue and help you – and the good news also is – there is freedom from habitual sin, having a “dark cloud” over your mind, and there is much good fruit of freedom to bear in this life. Please see more on ActionChristianity.com.
Scriptures – the Eternal Word of God – First
And the teachers of the law who came down from Jerusalem said, “He is influenced by Beelzebul! By the prince of demons, he is driving out demons.” So Jesus called them over to him and began to speak to them in parables: “How can Satan drive out Satan? If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand. And if Satan opposes himself and is divided, he cannot stand; his end has come. In fact, no one can enter a strong man’s house without first tying him up. Then he can plunder the strong man’s house. Truly I tell you, people can be forgiven all their sins and every slander they utter, but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; they are guilty of an eternal sin.” He said this because they were saying, “He has an impure spirit.”
Mark 3:22-30
Then they brought him a demon-influenced man who was blind and mute, and Jesus healed him, so that he could both talk and see. All the people were astonished and said, “Could this be the Son of David?” But when the Pharisees heard this, they said, “It is only by Beelzebul, the prince of demons, that this fellow drives out demons.” Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand. If Satan drives out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then can his kingdom stand? And if I drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your people drive them out? So then, they will be your judges. But if it is by the Spirit of God that I drive out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. “Or again, how can anyone enter a strong man’s house and carry off his possessions unless he first ties up the strong man? Then he can plunder his house. “Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters. And so I tell you, every kind of sin and slander can be forgiven, but blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come. “Make a tree good and its fruit will be good or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad, for a tree is recognized by its fruit. You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.
Matthew 12:22-34
So, What Is the Unforgivable Sin?
It is really very simple.
There is just one sin God cannot forgive. It is if we refuse His offer of complete forgiveness for free.
Jesus said:
When the Holy Spirit comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: about sin, because people do not believe in me; about righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; and about judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.
John 16:8-11
Sin = not believing in Jesus. That’s it! Because when we believe in Jesus – we believe He took all our sin on Him, away from us, and there is no longer sin, guilt, shame, punishment on us!
If God was to force forgiveness on us, it would break how forgiveness works. True love builds on true free will. It kills His gift of free will and the freedom of love and the honor of choice for Him to force it on us.
So, He cannot for He is love, forgiveness, grace, justice, and freedom. He cannot go against love! He will not – and He should not. If He did, He would not be love. If He did, He would not be perfect. He would not be God. He would not be justice and righteousness.
Why is Jesus speaking of this sin in the context of the Pharisees calling Him a demon?
Will you, if you believe in a good just and perfectly righteous God (which the Pharisees did) go to a demon (who is evil, filthy, and unreliable) to receive forgiveness? No. So by them calling Jesus a demon, they were blocking themselves from coming to Jesus to receive healing, forgiveness, and reconciliation with the Father.
Therefore, rejecting forgiveness through Jesus is the unforgivable sin. So, let’s 24/7 choose to live in the river of the intimate relationship of the love of the Father led by the Holy Spirit purchased in love by Jesus on the cross and by His blood in the eternal temple.
