Fasting Well – What Jesus and the Bible Teach About Fasting
What does the Bible teach about fasting? Jesus fasted and taught on fasting – here is what fasting is, what it is not, and how fasting well helps you obey God.
(Acts 17:11: Please learn to do your own Bible studies like this one – here.)
Main Scriptures on Fasting
The main scriptures on fasting by or from Jesus in the 4 accounts of His life
Our main scriptures on any subject must always be where Jesus was teaching on it – and also, Him practicing it. Jesus Himself practiced fasting by the leading of the Holy Spirit.
Matthew 3:13-17 and Matthew 4:1-11 – Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. But John tried to deter him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” Jesus replied, “Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.” Then John consented. As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.” Chapter 4: Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written: “ ‘He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’” Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’” Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.” Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’” Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.
Jesus fasted for 40 days and He was led to do it by the Holy Spirit. We should follow His example if we are led to do it. Jesus fasted and taught on fasting. We should fast and teach on fasting.
The Sermon on the Mount – Fasting
“Whenever you fast, do not put on a gloomy face as the hypocrites [do,] for they neglect their appearance so that they will be noticed by men when they are fasting. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full. “But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face so that your fasting will not be noticed by men, but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees [what is done] in secret will reward you.
Matthew 6:16-18
Principles: Do not do it TO be noticed by people. Do it to be noticed by your Father – who sees what is done in secret – and He will reward you. Is it wrong to call a fast and say you are fasting? No.
Jesus said it and did it and people knew, His followers did it and people knew. But it is the heart of it: Why do you do it? To be seen as a spiritual, holy, better than others, person in the eyes of yourself and people? Is it to elevate yourself above others? No.
The same principle goes for praying and giving (Matthew 6:1-15).
Why do the disciples of Jesus not fast – and what is another purpose of fasting?
Then the disciples of John came to Him, asking, “Why do we and the Pharisees fast, but Your disciples do not fast?” And Jesus said to them, “The attendants of the bridegroom cannot mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them, can they? But the days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast. “But no one puts a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; for the patch pulls away from the garment, and a worse tear results. “Nor do [people] put new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the wineskins burst, and the wine pours out and the wineskins are ruined; but they put new wine into fresh wineskins, and both are preserved.”
Matthew 9:14-17
Jesus wants to pour new wine out by His Spirit in us. New wine has to go into new wineskins that are fresh and flexible enough to expand as the new wine expands.
If the new wine goes into old stiff inflexible wineskins – both the beautiful wine will be spilled and the skins will break.
FASTING is an important way, now that Jesus is not here in the flesh to strongly correct and rebuke us, and physically love on us and stretch us, and show us how things are done, to keep us humble – fasting now will keep our own wineskin – flexible – to contain the new wine.
So – fasting stretches us and if done right – it humbles us to personal repentance – it turns our heart to the softness and the discipline of the Father – and it turns our old wineskin into new fresh, humble, repentant, obedient, and flexible wineskin.
That is what God can use and pour His fresh wine of the Holy Spirit into.
Fasting in the early church and in Isaiah
Now in the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen (who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch) and Saul. While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” So after they had fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them and sent them off.
Acts 13:1-3
“Shout it aloud, do not hold back. Raise your voice like a trumpet. Declare to my people their rebellion and to the descendants of Jacob their sins. For day after day they seek me out; they seem eager to know my ways, as if they were a nation that does what is right and has not forsaken the commands of its God. They ask me for just decisions and seem eager for God to come near them. ’Why have we fasted,’ they say, ’and you have not seen it? Why have we humbled ourselves, and you have not noticed?’ “Yet on the day of your fasting, you do as you please and exploit all your workers. Your fasting ends in quarreling and strife, and in striking each other with wicked fists. You cannot fast as you do today and expect your voice to be heard on high. Is this the kind of fast I have chosen, only a day for people to humble themselves? Is it only for bowing one’s head like a reed and for lying in sackcloth and ashes? Is that what you call a fast, a day acceptable to the LORD? “Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter – when you see the naked, to clothe them, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood? Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear; then your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the LORD will be your rear guard. Then you will call, and the LORD will answer; you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I. “If you do away with the yoke of oppression, with the pointing finger and malicious talk, and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday. The LORD will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail.
Isaiah 58:1-11
So – you cannot fast – and at the same time live in sin, in injustice toward your employees and colleagues, and NOT also give to the poor and needy and help people and lift people up. You cannot fast – and quarrel and be violent. Fasting, prayer, and giving – must go hand in hand with acts of justice, helping the poor, setting people free. It’s not either – or – it’s both.
The Essence of the Purpose of Fasting
The essence of the purpose of fasting is to be able to make a decision for God – in obedience to God – accurately – without showing partiality (unfairness) to anyone – against the flesh, the emotions, the people, the demons, and the needs – but obedience toward God purely.
This enables us to be truly mature and strong in faith and loyalty to the eternal truth, to make decisions that are driven and submitted to and under the Word of God and the Spirit of God, who is the Spirit of Truth. To deny emotions and choose the truth over emotions.
This is humility: obedience to the true commands and character of God by the Holy Spirit. It deepens and strengthens our understanding that we can make the decision to remain in the love of God even in hard circumstances – like fasting is.
What fasting is not and does not do
- What? You mean it is not a means of torturing yourself to get the attention and love of God? True! You already have the complete love and attention of God. The cross proves that 100%. You did no fasting to get the free and complete love of God through the cross.
- Fasting is not a means to be more loved by God or to be seen as more perfect in His eyes. Please fully understand that you ARE in the perfect and full love of God – just because you believe in Jesus! 1 Peter 3:12. Please study justification and righteousness by faith alone.
- What? Does it not give us more power? No! You have the fullness of the Spirit already!
- John 3:34 – God gives the Spirit without limit. Either you have the whole Holy Spirit – with all His power within you – or not. There is no “half” / small Holy Spirit. Romans 8:9.
- Fasting does enable you to obey what you hear better from the Holy Spirit when your flesh and demons are screaming – disobey (Romans 8:6)!! This enables you to bear more fruit. This enables you to see more of the power of God in and through you – because you are more obedient to the Spirit and less to the flesh and demons.
- What? Does it not give us more authority with God? No! You already have complete and perfect and total authority over all the power of the enemy.
- Luke 10:19 – See this as you have: I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt you.
This, however, is the challenge – to repent with focus and discipline wholeheartedly into this one:
This is TRUTH! Listen super carefully:
The Son can do nothing by himself. He does only what he sees the Father doing. Whatever the Father does, the Son also does.
John 5:19
What Does Healthy Biblical Fasting Do to and for You?
Basic theology is: We have been given so much free will by God – that we can say no to Him! We can decide to not believe He is good, trustworthy, loving, and fully for us. Even though He truly always is – we see that in and on the cross first: The clearest of all places – FOREVER!
- Fasting then, helps you to make a decision for, under, and with God and stick with it – even when it is hard – and the flesh – that NEEDS to be defeated – so we choose to focus on the Spirit – we teach ourselves – we discipline ourselves – to not have those needs be in charge! Who is your God? You God is whatever you obey!
Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so.
Romans 8:5-7
- Fasting helps you endure suffering in the flesh – also when it is not something you have chosen. It supercharges your will and resolve. You know in hard times you can still choose to do what is right. Fasting is a test from God – to choose the right identity and authority and response in the midst of suffering, hardship, injustice, in a “lack of Heaven”.
- It helps strengthen your willpower that you know you can choose to stay holy when the temptations come. And remember – Jesus also used commands of authority over the tempter to leave him – when He was tempted. We need to learn to do the same.
- It helps you exercise and understand the mighty freedom of your free will that God has given you responsibility to use – using it for, under, and with God by the power of focusing on the Holy Spirit – not what the flesh and demons desire.
Will fasting make me a super-powered giant?
No – and yes! You mean there are no rewards for fasting? No. There are rewards – like Jesus taught on the Sermon on The Mount. There are rewards from the Father – both physically and spiritually.
When you have fasted – in the right way, with the right heart, based on the love of the full adoption of the Father already of you – the Father will see that you will be able to carry more power and responsibility, so you may see the Father granting you that after a period of fasting.
