Correcting Others Correctly, Part 1 – Unity and Matthew 18:15-20 Explained

Correcting others correctly – in true love, gentleness, and humility – is a key to revival. This Bible study on Matthew 18:15-20 shows how, and why gossip must stop.

(Acts 17:11: Please learn to do your own Bible studies like this one – here.)

This Bible study on correcting others has 3 parts:

A “key to revival” Bible study – doing loving correction correctly. Gossip and division vs. true love, justice, unity, honor, faith, and honesty between people – in the context of the correction of sin in Matthew 18:15-20.

The level of importance this Bible study has to me…

The more I have looked into this and studied it and practiced it the more important I think it is. I call it “a key to revival” above – and I mean it. This must be restored to Christians. The fullness of it.

I even would place it in the level of deep inner healing and healthy interrogation style generational curse-breaking deliverance. But I would place it after it – but pretty much right after that. Practicing healthy inner healing and deliverance and then Matthew 18:15-20 (and all related Scripture) work hand in hand.

That is how important this is – and if you know how much time I have spent learning and practicing inner healing and deliverance – and the good fruit that has come from that in my own life and the lives of others – you know that this is very important in my understanding.

The Background Story

Why am I writing this? How have I come to where I am? In a conversation about church leadership in the church I was in I realized others were gossiping to me about others, and I confronted them, and they owned it, partially.

But I now suddenly knew and felt, I lacked a fuller better understanding of gossip and how to stop it and what to do instead.

So, I realized it would be a good idea to really study this out in the Bible to actually destroy gossip in the right way (and that is such a good idea on all things pertaining to both life and godliness (2 Peter 1:1-21)).

I felt I was lacking understanding of the fullness of the Word and will of God in the area. And then, when I really took the deep dive, I suddenly saw how I had gossiped too – way too many times. Ouch!!

Then, I saw it more and more in both my own life first and then the lives of others – even in live conversations and even within “big” “successful” Christian leaders and ministries as well. It reeks and stinks to high-Heaven.

So, I have had to now, because of this new-found much deeper understanding of this, done an increasing “round of repentance and humility” – talking with the people that I gossiped to about the leadership of the church and the church in general that I was a part of.

I realized and now know this problem in my life has been there as part of a deeper root of rejection, causing real hurt – but also pride, rebellion, and blindness in my life. So, of course, this sin is also partly demonically empowered and partly empowered by our sinful nature, our flesh and blood.

And I know that this gossip of mine has influenced too many others in the church negatively. So, I realized now, I became the critic, the “heresy hunter”, the self-righteous double standard, non-obedient, rebellious, not humble, not lowly one, not obedient to Jesus…

I have had to deeply repent before Jesus = turn from sin and start doing the right thing – and before the leadership – and before those gossiping to me that I did not confront. I am not saying I am now perfect!

Never – except for my core identity in the eyes of my Father through the blood of Jesus!

I am, by the way, in no way saying I was treated perfectly by the church members or the leaders in the church, in fact I wasn’t – but I did not respond to this as I now understand much better, that Jesus clearly commands we do when that happens!

Introductory Truth Parameters

A biblically based dictionary – definitions of the meaning of words

  • Sin – please look up the original Greek definition here: Greek: Strong’s G266. Sin is to miss the mark of what we should and can be and do in Jesus Christ. Sin is – missing the mark in terms of holiness, freedom, love, truth, power, the fullness of Christ – both in word and action – so when this word is used, we are also talking about improvement tips for ourselves, friends, teachers, leaders etc. This is, therefore, not only about total moral failure which is what these verses have mostly been used for.
  • Gossip (please start here: Greek: Strong’s G5587). Gossip is whispering… talking negatively and critically judging a person (event or organization – but always leads to a person who is responsible) who sins (according to your judgment – which might be correct) but who is not the one you are talking to and is not responsible for the bad or awkward behavior (= sin = missing the mark in Christ). It is to not talk with the person who has missed the mark of being the best version of themselves in Christ about that.
  • Repentance (Greek: Greek: Strong’s G3341) = to change our thinking from “radio hell” to “radio Heaven”. To stop agreeing with any lie and move to agree with all the liberating truth from Heaven and then to do it in the obedience of love. This is something we must do, daily, continually to grow as people – Jesus commanded us to do it – but demons cannot do it (repent).
  • Unity (Greek see 1: Greek: Strong’s G1520 and 2: Greek: Strong’s G1775). Not the same as being a copy and the exact same = uniformity. But it is to have the same broken mutually submitted heart to truly love God, others, and yourself. To put others above yourself. It is harmony, agreement, oneness, being one at heart and unified in bold humble action. It is to believe enough in everyone – that in and through Christ, and the power of the Holy Spirit and the love of the Father and our brokenness, repentance, humility, and willingness – everyone can change and get better.

The main Bible verses on the correct “correction of sin”

“If your brother or sister sins, go and point out their fault, just between the two of you. If they listen to you, you have won them over. But if they will not listen, take one or two others along, so that ‘every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.’ If they still refuse to listen, tell it to the church; and if they refuse to listen even to the church, treat them as you would a pagan or a tax collector. Truly I tell you, whatever you forbid on earth shall have been forbidden in Heaven, and whatever you loose / permit on earth shall have been loosed / permitted in Heaven. Again, truly I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything they ask for, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. For where two or three gather in my name (to do correction of sin), there am I with them.

Matthew 18:15-20

From this main and clear Scripture above, major cross references are found.

Related Scripture from the 4 stories of the life of Jesus

And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”

John 20:22-23

Matthew 16:19 (NLT + NASB) – And (to those who have this confession of faith) I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven. Whatever you forbid on earth shall have been forbidden in Heaven, and whatever you permit on earth shall have been permitted in Heaven.”

The Golden Rule

So, in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.

Matthew 7:12

“Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ’Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.

Matthew 7:3-5

Interpretation: We must come humbly, from below, with a broken repentant heart and attitude when doing correction work. Then we can restore, win, and help heal a sibling. Otherwise it becomes the blind leading the blind and they both fall into a ditch (Matthew 15:14) – if we are not truly, really healed ourselves, first. This also means we need to come to those needing correction with a healthy restoration plan including relationship, accountability, prayer, and to-do’s.

“Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift. “Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still together on the way, or your adversary may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison. Truly I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.

Matthew 5:23-26

Interpretation: This fits right into Matthew 18:15-20 and all the other Scriptures on judging between believers below. And what is so insane here is that God will let go of His RIGHT to receive worship – to prioritize unity through justice and forgiveness and restoration between His kids!!

This then fits in with all the prayers of Jesus for unity and the blessings of revival that flow from this.

Doing Matthew 18 right – and in the fullness of obedience to all of the cross references in the Word and cross references now clearly becomes a true and healthy and necessary foundation for revival!

From the letters in the New Agreement

We who believe will one day judge the world and angels. Where are the people who are wise enough to judge disputes between believers? Let us be those.

If any of you has a dispute with another, do you dare to take it before the ungodly for judgment instead of before the Lord’s people? Or do you not know that the Lord’s people will judge the world? And if you are to judge the world, are you not competent to judge trivial cases? Do you not know that we will judge angels? How much more the things of this life! Therefore, if you have disputes about such matters, do you ask for a ruling from those whose way of life is scorned in the church? I say this to shame you. Is it possible that there is nobody among you wise enough to judge a dispute between believers?

1 Corinthians 6:1-5

So when you are assembled and I am with you in spirit, and the power of our Lord Jesus is present, hand this man over to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved on the day of the Lord.

1 Corinthians 5:4-5

I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people – not at all meaning the people of this world who are immoral, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters. In that case you would have to leave this world. But now I am writing to you that you must not associate with anyone who claims to be a brother or sister but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or slanderer, a drunkard or swindler. Do not even eat with such people. What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those inside? God will judge those outside. “Expel the wicked person from among you.”

1 Corinthians 5:9-13

Could be the same person who now needs to be restored:

For I wrote you out of great distress and anguish of heart and with many tears, not to grieve you but to let you know the depth of my love for you. If anyone has caused grief, he has not so much grieved me as he has grieved all of you to some extent – not to put it too severely. The punishment inflicted on him by the majority is sufficient. Now instead, you ought to forgive and comfort him, so that he will not be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow. I urge you, therefore, to reaffirm your love for him. Another reason I wrote you was to see if you would stand the test and be obedient in everything. Anyone you forgive, I also forgive. And what I have forgiven – if there was anything to forgive – I have forgiven in the sight of Christ for your sake, in order that Satan might not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes.

2 Corinthians 2:4-11

Have you been thinking all along that we have been defending ourselves to you? We have been speaking in the sight of God as those in Christ; and everything we do, dear friends, is for your strengthening. For I am afraid that when I come I may not find you as I want you to be, and you may not find me as you want me to be. I fear that there may be discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, slander, gossip, arrogance and disorder. I am afraid that when I come again my God will humble me before you, and I will be grieved over many who have sinned earlier and have not repented of the impurity, sexual sin and debauchery (extreme and unhealthy self-satisfaction) in which they have indulged.

2 Corinthians 12:19-21

This will be my third visit to you. “Every matter must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.” I already gave you a warning when I was with you the second time. I now repeat it while absent: On my return I will not spare those who sinned earlier or any of the others.

2 Corinthians 13:1-2

I do not think I have ever heard a sermon on these verses… They are so strong, pure, loving, and aligned with all the rest of the Bible – and comes straight out of Matthew 18:15-20.

I urge you, brothers and sisters, to watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Keep away from them.

Romans 16:17

Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted.

Galatians 6:1

In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, we command you, brothers and sisters, to keep away from every believer who is idle and disruptive and does not live according to the teaching you received from us.

2 Thessalonians 3:6

Take special note of anyone who does not obey our instruction in this letter. Do not associate with them, in order that they may feel ashamed. Yet do not regard them as an enemy, but warn them as you would a fellow believer.

2 Thessalonians 3:14-15

holding on to faith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and so have suffered shipwreck with regard to the faith. Among them are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan to be taught not to blaspheme.

1 Timothy 1:19-20

1 Timothy 5:19-21 & 1 Timothy 5:24-25 – Do not entertain an accusation against an elder unless it is brought by two or three witnesses. But those elders who are sinning you are to reprove before everyone, so that the others may take warning. I charge you, in the sight of God and Christ Jesus and the elect angels, to keep these instructions without partiality, and to do nothing out of favoritism. … The sins of some are obvious, reaching the place of judgment ahead of them; the sins of others trail behind them. In the same way, good deeds are obvious, and even those that are not obvious cannot remain hidden forever.

Avoid godless chatter, because those who indulge in it will become more and more ungodly. Their teaching will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus, who have departed from the truth. They say that the resurrection has already taken place, and they destroy the faith of some. Nevertheless, God’s solid foundation stands firm, sealed with this inscription: “The Lord knows those who are his,” and, “Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness.”

2 Timothy 2:16-19

If you see any brother or sister commit a sin that does not lead to death, you should pray and God will give them life. I refer to those whose sin does not lead to death. There is a sin that leads to death. I am not saying that you should pray about that.

1 John 5:16

Interpretation: Prayer is definitely also a part of it. But not prayer only – also Spirit-led action – according to all the other Scriptures on this – the fullness of the Word.

Be merciful to those who doubt; save others by snatching them from the fire; to others show mercy, mixed with fear – hating even the clothing stained by corrupted flesh.

Jude 1:22-23

Covering The Sin – Not Mentioning It Publicly If It Is Not Leaders Doing The Sin – This Is Simply Among Christian Non-Leaders In the First 2 Steps of Matthew 18:15-20

Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.

1 Peter 4:8

My brothers and sisters, if one of you should wander from the truth and someone should bring that person back, remember this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of their way will save them from death and cover over a multitude of sins.

James 5:19-20

Because judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful. Mercy triumphs over judgment.

James 2:13

Back to the 4 stories of the New Agreement

It is grace before truth – not grace without truth. BOTH – and with a priority:

For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

John 1:17

Important Note Regarding the Laws of the Land

In view of the Mike Bickle case (and others like Robert Morris and Ravi Zacharias) which came to light in 2023 /2024 and other similar sexual abuse cases: Video 1 & 2)

Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended. For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience. This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing. Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.

Romans 13:1-7

If you have been sexually abused or under an unhealthy abusive manipulative cult-like predator leader or group, the actions and situation is included in the below – but the laws of the land also come into play – and there is a dimension of human respect.

Then you clearly do not need to confront your abuser / manipulator alone one on one, but the story must be told to others, especially the authorities if the law has been broken, and good people outside of the control of the manipulator, who can help and heal you and do the confronting for you according to the (hopefully) righteous and just laws of the land (since in some cases, laws have been broken) and healthy righteous and just Biblical guidelines – and you need inner healing and freedom from trauma, abuse, manipulation, and maybe even to be set free from attacking binding trauma-spirits, so you are healed and restored, and the leader needs to be confronted, corrected, and stopped, also publicly rebuked, and they very likely need inner healing and deliverance work through deep repentance.

The behavior of the leader of course must be stopped, they must be held accountable and prevented from continuing to harm others and proper righteous discipline both by government and the church must be implemented.

If there is ever an accusation against anyone in ministry, leadership, or even a father / mother / child (all humans can do unspeakable things – even to their own children) – it must be taken very seriously and be investigated thoroughly by very Scripturally, justice knowledgeable, people knowledgeable in the law of the land and deliverance and inner healing experts! With any Christian leader 1 Timothy 5:19-25 clearly must come into action.

Do you begin to see the importance of doing this right?

The red-hot challenge surrounding this, as you will see below:

If I and you will not do this (both proactively give and receive personal correct humble feedback / encouragement / confrontation / correction for our own good and the good of others well) we are in direct rebellion, the sin of cowardly omission, against a long range of the biggest and most agreed upon commands and prayers of Jesus where He was and is against gossip, and against injustice, and for unity based on love, mercy, grace, justice, and truth.

This is for justice for the weak, protection of victims – and correction and healing of sinners – and healing of victims – and true and proper deep repentance, healing, and restoration of sinning Christian leaders or Christians in general.

Post-reflection inserted here in the beginning that I realized during and after finishing this Bible-study:

Unity Is Part of the Very Essence of the Heart of God

I see now that Jesus is 100% passionate about this subject – for He loves His kids and His bride and when you begin to look for Scriptures on this subject of gossip vs. unity and doing correction correctly – there are so many! Why?

He loves unity and hates division – and division comes from gossip and is truly from the pit of hell! The Trinity (The Father, The Son, The Spirit – three in ONE) IS unity – in diversity. Jesus IS unity! He oozes it. 3 different persons who are all ONE God.

God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit – Who are so much in love with each other, honor each other so much, give themselves to the others – completely – mutually submitting under each other – that they are ONE in heart, purpose, spirit, embrace, joy, and encouragement. God is BEAUTIFUL!

They are in perfect harmony and unity – forever.

So, unity stems from the very eternal essence and heart, the very core personality and character of the ONE and only Creator, Daddyo God (my modernized affectionate intimate expression of “Abba Father” (Romans 8:15 + Galatians 4:6)). … we have been made in His image … – the need for unity is, therefore, in our DNA – and the enemy, satan, hates it when we are in unity.

But blessings flow richly as well – from the Father – when we are in true covenantal unity.

Jesus wants this prayer answered – and it is possible – we must go for this with no compromise

“My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one – I in them and you in me – so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.

John 17:20-23

This Bible study has made me realize part of how this is done practically.

We need this. We were made for this:

A song of ascents. Of David: How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity! It is like precious oil poured on the head, running down on the beard, running down on Aaron’s beard, down on the collar of his robe. It is as if the dew of Hermon were falling on Mount Zion. For there the LORD bestows his blessing, even life forevermore.

Psalm 133:1-3

Therefore, this – is extremely important!! It touches the very fabric and heart of the God of tender gentle and kind love Whom we are passionately loved by and Whom we love back and then serve. As you study on with me here – I hope you will see what I mean – and agree.

The dream

Seriously – you, and others, the whole body of Christ, the global church, will grow SO much through practicing this in the way Jesus described this. It will create a unity and freedom, maturity, and love like never before. And where there is unity – God will command a blessing (Psalm 133 and OpenBible.info).

So, let’s not just listen to this – but let us do this. We must – He commands it – and we must obey. For the command, like every command of God, is made and created of pure wholehearted real relational love, truth, justice, life, light, and proactive action-taking faith.

Deep Interpretation and Practice of Matthew 18:15-20

Again – this is our main passage – so please read it now with full attention as a command directly from God for each one of us to obey

Matthew 18:15-20 (NIV + NASB20) – “If your brother or sister sins, go and point out their fault, just between the two of you. Matthew 18:18 NASB20 – “Truly I say to you, whatever you bind (= forbid) on earth shall have been bound (= forbidden) in Heaven; and whatever you loose (= allow) on earth shall have been loosed (= allowed) in Heaven. “Again, truly I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything they ask for, it will be done for them by my Father in Heaven. For where two or three gather in my name (maturely by obedient saints walking in the fruit of the Spirit according to the will of Heaven for the purpose of establishing love, justice, truth, humility, honor, unity, restoration, and correction according to the context of Matthew 18:15-20), there am I with them.”.

Verse 15 – step 1

If your brother or sister sins, go and point out their fault, just between the two of you. If they listen to you, you have won them over.

Sin – misses the mark. Acting on this command is mature patient faith and unity seeking discipleship. This is love. This is hard work. It is faith. It is risky. It is vulnerable. What if they have sinned against you – and you have been wounded – and now they could attack you even harder?

This is challenging for both the “parent” and the “child”. And the roles here can and should go both ways – for none of us see fully as parents or as kids, none of us are perfect. We are ourselves all kids – who are under construction.

If it works, “you have won them over” = the purpose and faith of your heart must be to win them over.

You must believe in them, the transgressor / sinner, and that they can change and that you can help them and that they want to change, and are going to actually change – also if that is hard. This is a pre-requisite. This requires self-confidence – and really God-fidence!

And it includes the realization that you, yourself must, and can change and repent and get better! If you can, then others can. And then you can help others get the same help that you got.

There is here NO provision to simply show empathy and listen to a friend talk about the issues they see someone else has! If people come to you and tell you about the mistakes of others, you can say: “Hey I get you are hurt and what they did is not right.

But to tell me what bad they did to you is not right either. You need to ensure you do 4 things immediately:

  • Completely forgive them from your heart (not the same as saying what they did is right and good). Avoiding a bitter root which will harm you.
  • Set proper boundaries between you and them if needed.
  • Evaluate your trust level with them and how much trust they qualify for. Trust is then maybe re-earned.
  • Execute justice and restoration through correction and accountability discipleship.

With number 4: You now need to execute 100% obedience to Jesus and go and talk with that person 1-on-1. What you just did now, telling me, and not them, is actually sinful gossip. Please repent of that immaturity and sin now – and go talk with them directly and personally.

And remember to tell me how it went – for I now need to clear my head of knowing something negative that might be incorrect about them. Gossip influences people into division and suspicion much more than you and I know!

If you do not go to them – and come back to me, I need to do a Matthew 18:15-20 process with you due to the gossip and disunity you have just influenced me with.”

Verse 16 – step 2

Verse 16 – step 2 in the process. This amazing important step is very often skipped. But that is not good, right, mature, loving, good – therefore it is not Biblical.

But if they will not listen, take one or two others along, so that ‘every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.’

Then – if the person you have personally talked with about a problematic area of their lives one on one do not listen or don’t even want to talk with you about the issue – then explain to that person, that you will now go to 1-2 good witnesses and bring them with you into the situation.

If they still refuse to own their sin, share the situation with 1 or 2 other good mature believers and take them with you to the person who missed the mark.

Preferably those should be people both you and they respect and they must have maturity and honor, wisdom, brokenness, and repentance in their personality as well as inner healing and deliverance in their toolbox to heal and restore – just like Jesus did and He commanded all His disciples to have (see Matthew 28:18-20 + Matthew 10 and Luke 10).

Here in this step in the process you, the one doing the correction work, might even yourself get a deeper perspective on the case and resolve to stop and come back to the person you want to correct and one on one repent of pride and judgmentalism…!!

But you might also now really get the attention of the person who can feel that this is serious and important and loving and they can proceed to improve their life as a Christian. This is exactly the intention of God in honor for that person you are trying to help.

In Jesus we only have one option when we see a brother or sister who sins – talk directly with them 1-1 in private first.

If they are not even willing to talk with us, then it is step 2: Take another good, trusted person or 2 with you who understand and agree with your case.

You who is doing the correction work should have this heart purpose and belief: To win them – to better them, to serve and help them to become better and free.

Verse 17a – step 3 – the bigger one

If they still refuse to listen, tell it to the church; and if they refuse to listen…

Now it “goes big” – this is “the assembly” of the saints – the local accountability and leadership in the family faith gathering of Christians or the family of friends that the person is a part of.

When both step 1 and 2 are done well, with love, humility, gentleness, honor, brokenness, wisdom and justice, now the original person pointing out sin and the 1-2 witnesses who agree this is not ok should reach out to this larger local group and present the case to the leadership.

If the majority of the local assembly agrees with the errors, the person being asked to repent should really now wake up to the seriousness of the situation and deeply consider if what they are doing is amazing Christian loving behavior resembling Christ, holiness, truth, and honor in that specific area where they are missing the mark.

What sins justify these actions?

Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people. Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving. For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person – such a person is an idolater – has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God’s wrath comes on those who are disobedient. Therefore do not be partners with them.

Ephesians 5:1-7

Verse 17b – step 4 – the final step of consequences

If they refuse to listen even to the church, treat them as you would a pagan or a tax collector.

And then if they do not repent, even though their family of co-believers mostly agree that they need to agree to change their behavior / theology, they should be treated as someone who Jesus and we, the church, deeply loves and wants to hang out with as a pre-believer and share life with to a certain extent – but also someone who is not willing to admit their wrong and work on and change their choice to hold onto sin-influenced beliefs or behavior – and who is not willing to receive help to change.

They are unwilling to repent of correctly corrected sin. There are serious consequences to such choice of behavior.

Can it then be that the person being confronted is only a sinner in that specific area (not in all their beliefs and behavior)? And be like a “heathen” in one specific area – but not others? Yes.

Even where it is not so destructive that it needs to be taken to the whole church? Yes??? Remember to pray for this person. Pray for wisdom. Pray their faith might not fail. Pray for help from the Holy Spirit in the midst of it all.

What if they just change churches and keep going?

What if they then leave that fellowship and find another fellowship? I think churches should communicate with each other and have a “warning list” where “we are treating this one as a non-believer right now” due to unwillingness to take responsibility to receive correction and a restoration plan in this (these) area(s): X, Y, Z.

Example: This person wants to do ministry and deliverance and lead people – but is full of deep hurt and offense, an orphan attitude toward correction and is, therefore, blind to the same attitude in those they are ministering to. This leads to poor results and low stability in holiness.

Recommendation to say: Stop doing deliverance until you are well and truly healed and have a healed heart and sound doctrine. Repent. Come under leadership and a healthy restoration plan which has been created and partly rejected. Come under healthy fathers and mothers in the faith.

This is no different than the Danish “staffeattest” (criminal record) and whether you have good recommendations or the opposite.
