Can Christians Need Deliverance? A Short Theology and Practice of Deliverance

SHARE

This short theology of deliverance answers from the Bible whether good, on-fire Christians can need deliverance from demons – and how to practice it.

(Acts 17:11: Please learn to do your own Bible studies like this one – here.)

Unfortunately, I have to start in a bit of an annoying place when teaching on deliverance from the Bible. Annoying as it is, it is necessary – as you will see.

Can Good, On-Fire Christians Need Deliverance From Demons?

YES!! 100%!! I desperately needed it, yet didn’t know it – and YouTube is overflowing with not-for-profit, raw, and honest testimonies of apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers – disciples and pre-believers of ALL kinds who needed it and are free today.

Here is a list of the necessary and clearest biblical clarifications I can find as to how this is possible. The two main problems Christians have with it are:

  1. Where is there a truly born-again Christian in the Bible who goes through deliverance?
  2. How can a Christian be “possessed” by a demon – and be born again and “possessed” by the Holy Spirit? How can both live together in the same person?

Answers

  • I grant that it is not clear in the Gospels, Acts, or the letters that a Christian fully born again by the Holy Spirit (which happened after Jesus’ resurrection) – who now lives inside them – is shown going through deliverance. It is clear that pre-believers, or maybe brand-new believers…?, receive deliverance, for instance through Philip (Acts 8:7) and Paul (Acts 16:16-18).
  • The erroneous translation and use of the word “possession” in 99% of all English-language Bibles has had consequences. Demons do not “own” anyone. Please see the deeper Bible and Greek word study below.

The best arguments I have from the Bible

  • Forgiveness as an example. Can you be a Christian if you have not completely forgiven all others? YES! Look up Matthew 18:34-35. See how those who do not “forgive … from your heart” are handed over “to the jailers to be tortured” by the Father! That sounds a lot like demons are allowed to “jail and torture us” if we will not forgive.
  • Where do demons actually sit and live in a person? The Holy Spirit lives in the spirit of a person (John 3:6, Romans 8:9). The demons attach themselves to the flesh and influence the soul (mind, will, and emotions) of a person. How do we see that? They can certainly bring sickness (Luke 13:16) and influence the thoughts and emotions of a person (Mark 9:22).
  • Deliverance is the children’s bread (Mark 7:27) – not the bread of the devil’s children.
  • If truly born-again Christians do not need deliverance after they are born again – why are they not also 100% healed and 100% sin-free? The clear experience of people who are born again is that they have a need for deliverance. This is seen both in ancient church history and in modern days.
  • Should we do it on non-Christians? YES. Jesus did. Those He delivered were not born again.

The Use of the Word “Possession” / “Possessed” in English Bible Translations

This is literally one of the biggest problems that has to be tackled head-on: the use of the word “possession” in most Bible translations. I would like to challenge you to look it up yourself – right now – for instance here: Strong’s 1139 – daimonizomai and echonta – Strong’s 2192.

Two words are used in the original Greek manuscripts of the Bible – and both are falsely (not just inaccurately) translated as “possession” in all modern English Bible translations.

Word one – daimonizomai – δαιμονίζομαι (and all forms derived from it)

The word daimonizomai and its derivatives occur 25 times in the New Testament and are always translated “possessed.” It should literally never (!!!) be translated “possession” – but always “demonized,” meaning “influenced by demons.” This wrong, misguiding – I dare say even demonic – translation has given the theology (foundation of truth) and thereby the ministry (practice) of deliverance the wrong foundation for many, even strongly charismatic and Pentecostal Christians, leading them to not, or almost not, do it.

In English, “possession” contains the clear, overarching thought of “ownership” – so the consequence has been the theology that Christians do not need deliverance, because: How can the Holy Spirit “own” a person and a demon “own” that person at the same time? Also, the word “possession” is extremely all-encompassing, either/or, extreme, and violent in nature – whereas “demonized” has levels, flexibility, and intelligence. Meaning: a demonized person can have hidden demons that influence a little at various times – or more at other times.

Please read this yourself in the first link above – Thayer’s Greek Lexicon (Strong’s NT 1139):

δαιμονίζομαι; 1 aorist passive participle δαιμονισθείς; (δαίμων); to be under the power of a demon.

The word itself does not talk about ownership in any way at all – but influence. And demons REALLY prefer to hide. They hide in sicknesses, bad habits, negative thoughts, sin, half-truths, limitations, accusations, fears and phobias, religion, etc.

Word two – echonta – ἔχοντα

The other word used of people influenced by demons is “to have” a demon (Mark 9:17 – ἔχοντα). This is ALSO translated as being demon-possessed in many modern Bible translations – which is just as bad. This “strike number two” of extremely bad translation almost proves that demons were influencing the translators – as they did the apostle Peter (Matthew 16:23) and Judas (John 13:27). Because all the other times this word is used in the Bible – 26 times (!!!) – it is simply translated “to have.”

At least in the translations where “to have a demon” is written, it is 100% accurate according to the Greek – and accurate to the full perspective of true theology as well as real-life practice and experience. It is not the demon who has the person – but the person who “has” the demon, due to open doors in that person’s life.

My heartfelt recommendation and prayer

My recommendation to you, therefore, is this: Whenever you read or hear the word “possessed” or “possession” in the Bible or in sermons from this moment on – change it immediately inside yourself to “demonized” / “influenced by demons” / “has a demon.” And whenever you have a chance to speak to someone about this error – seek to correct it.

Unfortunately, right now you are up against Bible translators and scholars who usually do not practice deliverance. And even those who believe in it and practice it are not consistent in correcting this error. People tend to stick to translation tradition on this point – which is understandable. But that is exactly why you must make up your own mind about this and study it out like a Berean – in order to stand firm, humbly yet firmly on truth, love, and justice.

Highest-level action – let’s believe we can change this

Those of you reading this who have influence on actual Bible translators – please talk with them about it. Show them videos of good Christians who get deliverance, let them hear the testimonies – and share this simple little Bible study with them if you wish. There is nothing fishy here at all.

I am not alone in having understood it like this

All strong deliverance ministries know this truth, teach it, and act on it. See the list here:

Other Typical Deliverance Questions Answered

What are the different types and times of deliverance?

  • Brute-force deliverance – on the streets. Shouting competitions.
  • In-meeting or online mass deliverance – commanding general commands.
  • One-on-one in-meeting prayers – during a meeting’s ministry time.
  • One-on-one repentance, inner healing, and deliverance sessions – including deep repentance and ownership of all sin, deep forgiveness, rejecting deep rejection, deep inner healing, generational curse breaking, and interrogation-style deliverance of demons revealing their names and legal rights.

Is doing deliverance sessions biblical?

Why do a lot of people set up deliverance sessions, often going through a written form and then hours of prayers, confessions, etc.? It doesn’t seem they did that in the Gospels and Acts.

  • If people have not forgiven everyone, they need to be led through that. If they do not, demons clearly have a legal ground of access to them (Matthew 18:34-35).
  • Deliverance can take time. Jesus first commanded the demons in the man influenced by Legion to go. They didn’t just go! Then He asked for the name. Then there were the pigs… then they were cast out. The disciples couldn’t cast a particular demon out, and Jesus said they needed more faith, prayer, and fasting – to be more effective.
  • As you do deliverance, you find that people have opened themselves to demons through sin they have to repent from. You also find that demons have come in through curses and the sins of ancestors, where spirits are inherited through generations.

Should I be afraid of the demonic and of deliverance?

No. Drop the Hollywood scare movies. We should have respect, yes. We should have understanding, yes. We should teach those getting deliverance to fill their house with Jesus, truth, the Holy Spirit – and with fierce resistance. We should know our authority in Christ, 100%. We should know that “greater is He, the Holy Spirit, who is in us, than he, Satan, who is in the world” (1 John 4:4). We should understand what deliverance is and what it is not, and how to do it effectively – because Jesus did deliverance, and He has commanded us to do deliverance.

“I will do deliverance when a demon pops up”

I have heard that said, but I say: That sounds macho and balanced, but it is not 100% balanced and biblical. I understand the balance of not calling a broken leg from a football injury a demon. But Jesus commanded His disciples to GO and drive out demons – proactively. In the Gospel of Mark, on several occasions it was even the only thing Jesus is described as doing, and the only thing He sent them out to do (Mark 1:39, Mark 3:15). And to Jesus Himself, it was normal practice at public healing meetings to also drive out demons as part of healing the sick, prophesying, etc.

“Christians can be influenced by demons – but not possessed like the demoniac”

I have heard it said: “Christians can be influenced by demons – but not possessed in such a way that they are like the demoniac, completely taken over.” But I say: This is, first of all, based on the wrong word – possession – which is a false base for demonology and deliverance. This is addressed above.

Secondly, this theology then messes people up, because during normal deliverance of normal, born-again, tongue-talking, radically serving Christians, the demons sometimes come up, reveal and expose themselves – and “take over” completely during a deliverance!! So now they are not saved according to this false deliverance theology!?! EEEEE – WRONG!! They are born-again Christians – they just need deliverance. That’s it.

Is it only for non-Christians, only for Christians – or not at all?

Some Christians say it is not even for today. Others say it is only for Christians. Others, that it is for today but not for Christians – for how can a demon possess a person in whom the Holy Spirit lives? See how messed up “possession” is for healthy theology? The Bible and I say deliverance is for both. Jesus never said not to do it on non-Christians. Jesus and the disciples did it to people who were NOT born again by the Spirit of God – before Pentecost, before people could be born again by the Holy Spirit. He did say that people should “clean house” so nothing worse happens to them (Matthew 12:43-45) – and “Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you” (John 5:14). People need to repent from sin and go for complete holiness – always.

Do people need to be born again? Yes – but not before they get deliverance. But to stay delivered, it is the best choice – as well as, of course, for the sake of eternity and Heaven.

Who can do deliverance?

Anyone who wants to! You prove you want to by studying it, by learning from those who do it, and by actually stepping out and doing it. This is for any disciple – not for special, holy, called ministers. Submit yourself to be trained and discipled by a “master deliverer” – someone who, hands-on, will teach you and train you how to do it.

Jesus was a Master Deliverer – as well as a Master of all things – and when the disciples had seen enough, learned enough, and done enough under His supervision, He sent them out to do it themselves. In Luke 10:1, Jesus sends out 72 “others” – no titles, no names; they had just hung out long enough with Jesus and learned how He did it… and then He pushed them out of the nest. Come with me as I do it.

When can deliverance be done?

At all times. Publicly. Privately. At work. In school. At parties. Everywhere. Do not limit Jesus, the Holy Spirit, or the Father. Jesus and the disciples did it literally everywhere.

Who can benefit from deliverance? How do you know if you need it?

Demons love to hide – and might have nothing to do with you personally having sinned. Demons might be generational, they might come from curses, they might have come in through trauma or surgery, or they might have gained access through a sin you committed and need to truly repent from.

How to do deliverance

First, read all the stories in the four Gospels and Acts about deliverance, and do Bible studies on the demonic. Then watch modern-day deliverances on YouTube – for instance by Vlad Savchuk, Isaiah Saldivar, Mike Signorelli, Todd White, and Daniel Adams. Also read good books about deliverance by Derek Prince, Don Basham, Don Dickerman, etc. Then sign up to help via Daniel Adams’ Forerunners and Isaiah Saldivar on Discord, where you can be trained to take part in deliverance sessions – and end up leading your own.

Binge-watch this so that it becomes normal to you – as it was to Jesus and His disciples. What you eat, you become. What you focus on, you learn. What you practice, you grow in.
