(Acts 17:11: Please learn to do your own Bible studies like this one – here.)

John 10:27, John 5:19, Hebrews 1:1-3, John 1:1-5, John 1:14, Revelation 1:4-18, 1 Kings 19:11-13, 1 Corinthians 14:1, John 17:3, Matthew 6:5-15.

My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.

John 10:27

Theological Basis

We believe God speaks to us today. The primary way He speaks to us is through His Word, the Bible. God will never say anything that contradicts what He has already said in the Bible. It is so important to read and know the Bible in order to discern whether what we sense God is saying to us can truly be from Him.

God wants to lead us, guide us, and speak to us about the present, the past, and the future. God is a speaking God and loves to speak to us – we are truly His children. It is also important to know healthy theology based on the Bible, and to be part of a strong, healthy local church with good leadership and discipleship, to stay healthy in our quest to hear from God.

The Amazing Consequences

We can come to God with boldness, seeking Him to hear from Him. We can hear from God and truly be led by Him. How absolutely amazing is that?

Here we have to be very careful not to be prideful – because when they think they hear from God, some have become prideful, saying, “Now I don’t need to listen to anyone else.” The fact is that God often speaks to us through other healthy Christians. It is never from God not to be in healthy Christian local church fellowship.

Action Steps to Experience Hearing the Voice of God

  • Be broken and obedient out of your heart’s desire for His goodness. Be changed by His love and by obedience to all His loving commands.
  • Have a daily habit of reading the Bible, praying, and worshiping with thankfulness.
  • Be an active member – serving and working to build your local church into a strong, healthy, living, Bible-teaching, loving church.
  • Do what you read in the Bible, and be passionate about serving your church and her leaders, so the church is healthy, grows, and sees new people come to know Jesus.
  • Make sure other healthy local leaders know you, and be willing to listen to what they advise.
  • Seek the baptism of the Holy Spirit and the gift of speaking in tongues.

Living out all of the above will safeguard you from the pride that can come from hearing from God. Then:

  1. After a time of Bible reading, worship, and thankfulness in prayer, also take time to command any voices of the enemy to be quiet, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Pray in tongues for a while.
  3. Then take time in your devotions to be silent and listen.
  4. Whatever you think of as you listen and pray – for yourself, others, or situations – write it down.
  5. Submit whatever you feel God is speaking to you about to your local leadership and spiritual oversight – your connect group leader, team leader, and others in the structure above you – to be sure that what you are sensing is submitted to Jesus.
  6. Do what you feel God is saying! Do it with boldness, love, humility, wisdom, brokenness, gentleness, thankfulness, and honor. But do it.
